If you sell to Pierre but don't buy from Pierre the difference is taking money out of his pockets. No real difference. Box does count for achievements and such, selling to Pierre doesn't, but it's easy enough to not matter. Pierre will give you money right away, so good to sell excess to buy seeds if needed.
